Oversized and Trip Permits

Overweight & Oversize Permits – Annual

When a commercial vehicle hauls a load that is oversize or overweight, a temporary oversize or overweight load permit (also known as a temporary truck or trip permit) is needed for it to legally travel. However, operators who transport OS/OW loads on a regular and routine basis through one or more states may find it advantageous to obtain annual permits. The advantages of an annual permit are that, based on the number of trips, the OS/OW fee per trip may be less, and more importantly, operators can have more flexibility in scheduling trips rather than waiting for individual approvals and a permit.

In the United States, in most cases, a load is considered an oversize or overweight load and requires an oversize or over/permit when:

In Canada, in most cases, a load is considered an oversize or overweight load and requires an oversize or over/permit when:

At Global Truck Permits, we help transportation companies with the oversize and overweight permitting process in the shortest time possible. In Canada and the United States, whether you need an overweight permit for your trucks depends on the province or state you will be crossing and on many other variables like axle spreads, specific axle weights, tire size, etc. So, we gather the information from the client and figure out when and where they would require a permit.

Overweight & Oversize Permits – Temporary

When carrying an OS/OW load between multiple states, operators must get permits from each state. These permits can take hours to 10 days to obtain, depending on state restrictions, load specifications, and route. Coordinating such travels involves careful organization and knowledge of each state’s application process and timetable. Individual trip permits are useful for operators who move OS/OW loads infrequently, but they take time.

In most cases in the United States, a load qualifies as an oversize or overweight load and requires an oversize or over/permit.

In Canada, in most cases, a load is considered an oversize or overweight load and requires an oversize or over/permit when:

Global Truck Permits expedites the permitting procedure for transportation companies. The province or state you traverse in Canada or the US, axle spreads, axle weights, tire size, and other factors determine whether you require an overweight permit for your trucks. We determine when and where the client needs a permit from their information.

Seven-day in-transit permits are designed for inter-provincial use to transport a vehicle from a point inside Saskatchewan to a point outside of Saskatchewan. These permits are available from motor licence issuers and provide registration and insurance during the in-transit process.

They are issued primarily to non-residents needing to get their vehicles from Saskatchewan to their home province. Permit conditions and uses are restricted to ensure that it is recognized and accepted by other Canadian jurisdictions.

A 7-day in-transit permit can be used for the operation of:

The 7-day in-transit permit is valid for up to seven days or when the vehicle reaches its destination, whichever comes first. Carriers involved in transporting tobacco products must register for an interjurisdictional transporter registration certificate. The Ministry of Finance issues the certificate. You must register for a transporter certificate if you transport the following products:

The Ministry of Finance issues the certificate, and once you register, the ministry will mail you each month a personalized return. Hazardous Materials Safety Permit (HMSP) Program

Carriers must fulfill regulatory obligations to obtain or renew an HMSP. These obligations include the maintenance of financial responsibility, registration with PHMSA, development of security and communication plans, and the maintenance of a satisfactory safety rating.

Global Truck Permits & Authorities ensures that compliance and safety standards are adhered to by aiding transport companies in the acquisition, upkeep, and renewal of HMSP permits. Reach out to us if you require any further assistance.

Alcohol Transportation Permit (Carriers)

Transporting alcohol is mainly controlled by each state in United States. This means you need special licenses and permits, but the rules vary.

In about half of the states in the United States, you must have a license or permit to bring alcohol into the state. In others, you might need one if you’re delivering alcohol within that state, delivering from it, passing through with alcohol, or transporting it within the state.

So, there isn’t a universal rule for getting an alcohol transport permit. To make sure you’re following the law and avoid any surprises on the road, you need to pay close attention to the rules of each state you’ll be traveling through.

You can refer to the table below for general information on the requirements for alcohol transport permits and licenses in each state.
